We recommend the use of Ordnance Survey maps. 1:50 000 Landranger No. 185 Winchester & Basingstoke area 1:25 000 Explorer No 132 Winchester New Alresford & East Meon. Without a map: Golf course and Lanham Lane Go left out of Lainston Close. At the bend of Dean Lane take the right turn up the little hill and right again into Hampton Lane. At the end of the lane go right down the path for a short way then left. This can be a little muddy. The path will take you onto the golf course and lead you out by the club house on to Sarum Rd.
Go right along the single track road until you get to a cross roads. Go right here and continue past the masts until the made up road turns into a footpath, possibly muddy. At each opportunity take the right hand path. This will turn into a more substantial track and lead you gradually downhill until you reach Dean Lane again at a cross roads. Turn right down Dean lane and within 10 minutes you will be back at Lainston Close on the left. This walk will take you an hour to an hour and a half.
Dean Lane and Dean; The Plough, Sparsholt Turn right out of Lainston Close. It is a very pleasant walk up the tarmac road of Dean Lane which is a single-track road leading to the hamlet of Dean, (about 30 minutes walk). People walk in the middle of the road!! At the top of the rise following a long gentle dip, in about 20 minutes, there is a track forking to the left. This leads to a number of different paths. If you keep going straight on you will come out onto a tarmac road on the edge of Sparsholt along way from the pub! If you take a path at right angles to the right it will bring you out in Dean.
From Dean you can continue on up the hill when the road turns sharp right. This will bring you to a T-junction with a larger road. Go left and the pub is some 500 yards on the right about 45 minutes from Lainston. About half way up the hill from Dean is a path on the left going diagonally across a field. This will cut the corner off the route to the pub. You will probably arrive then with muddy shoes at the pub!
